Reader Responds to “Who Participates in Ceremony?” (May 2003 issue)

Dear Editor,
I was interested to read the article on who should participate in the sweatlodge. It raises the question of what the creator had in mind when he created the many tribes of man.

My first experience of the sweatlodge took place in Ireland without a Native American Indian in sight and with scant knowledge of the detail of the ceremony. It was approached, however, with great respect in the hearts of the participants.

During the ceremony I saw that we, the participants, were the poles of a tepee, each dependent on the other for support. We were poles of blue light. Then I was brought beyond that and shown that we work together to fashion the physical universe and the creatures within it. The source of that power was the love of the Creator as it is given to us. The nature of our creation was shaped by the quality of our thoughts, the thoughts of all mankind.

Perhaps Garret Wounded Head and those who feel like him might open their hearts for a moment and let this story in, and perhaps ask themselves why an ordinary Irish person such as myself should be given such a vision and why would they stop the Creator from speaking to such as myself, their brother in creation.

With respect,
Michael Powell
